D2D wind-down and updates

The University of Minnesota is known as a place of discovery, innovation, and transformation. There’s a deep affinity for Driven to Discover —  it’s helped shape our reputation for curiosity, ambition, innovation and research excellence. And while it has served us well, we’re at a key inflection point in higher education and in our culture at large, and the brand needs to reflect and respond meaningfully.

As we look ahead, we’ll begin introducing a new brand internally this spring, with an external rollout starting in August. Your voice and active support will be key as we navigate the transition together.

Below are immediate action steps for you to take, as well as key updates regarding templates, downloads and changes to come.

Immediate action steps

  • Remove references to “Driven to Discover” from copy, and omit the Driven to Discover tagline from logos and digital signage.
  • Discontinue use of logos that include the tagline.
  • Partner with your marketing communications lead to inventory your most visible materials (website, key publications, signage). Prioritize what to update now and prepare to apply new brand assets in spring 2026.

Google Docs

We’ve refreshed the Google Doc templates across all five campuses. The new templates:

  • Come in two simplified variations (maroon and gold)
  • Have been reviewed by ODA for WCAG 2.1 accessibility compliance
  • Remove Driven to Discover
  • Include baseline styling for Headings 1–6
  • Work for both print and digital use

Primary University marks

The primary University marks (wordmark, Block M, etc.) have also been updated. Changes include:

  • Removal of Driven to Discover
  • Updated naming conventions and file structure
  • Streamlined options

Please replace any previous versions of the wordmarks and Block Ms you may be using. Visit the Logos Downloads page to download.

Website updates

Drupal website headers were updated on October 22. This update did not apply to customized Drupal sites or other platforms. Those who use customized Drupal sites or other platforms will need to update their headers manually or work with their vendors to ensure the header is in place. Updated header files are available on the University Marketing and Communications website.

If Driven to Discover appears elsewhere on your site, please remove it.

Email templates

Email templates have been refreshed to align with updated brand standards and accessibility best practices. They were made available in Salesforce Marketing Cloud on October 27.

Upcoming changes

We are currently working through updates on the following templates:

  • Google Slides/Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Google Sites

We will let you know when these updates are complete.

This is an exciting transition as we prepare for a refreshed brand launch next year. If you have any questions, contact the Brand team by filling out the Brand Request form
