Five steps to better employee wellbeing
The end of the year brings excitement and anticipation, as well as a final push on projects deemed essential. Managing your wellbeing during this time can be hard, and attempting to get it all done can lead to burnout, especially when, as communicators, there are often unexpected issues to manage on top of your usual work
This year, don’t let burnout win. This article from Gallagher provides five actionable steps you can use now and take into the new year to navigate work burnout.
Be strategic with your workload management
The most referenced method for curbing burnout in many workplaces is a manageable workload. A 2024 Gallagher report showed that the greater your sense of flexibility and control, the greater your sense of personal wellbeing. Communicate with your team and manager about the current workload and where adjustments need to be made to achieve a more equitable distribution of work.
Communicate your boundaries
Communicate your workload and priorities clearly so you can focus on urgent tasks while giving equal attention to less critical projects. If your work is more spontaneous, have clear response plans so everyone knows their role should issues arise.
During the holiday season, clearly state your time off and how people should or shouldn’t contact you during that time to keep a healthy work-life balance and be present with family and friends. When one leads by example, others are sure to follow.
Engage with peers
Spark passion and renewed energy in your work by engaging with communications colleagues. Meet with them to discuss current developments and receive advice to help you reach the finish line.
Likewise, plan to sign up for the Communicators Forum and various Communities of Practice in the new year, or take the leap and start your own group that meets the needs you’re searching for.
Build resilience
Don’t take on this work alone. Talk openly about challenges you’re facing to build a culture of support and relieve tensions you’ve been feeling. Mental health is paramount to your effectiveness at work and overall wellbeing outside of the office.
Develop coping strategies to manage work woes and reframe challenges as growth opportunities. Make use of the Employee Assistance Program or modules from the Center for Spirituality and Healing along the way.
Know that you’re not alone
Your team, unit, college and campus are experiencing similar pressures during this time of year. Know that you can make it through and that it’s always better to navigate tough situations together.
